The Myth of a Worm
According to local legend, this expressive mask was carved by the Admiralty sculptor Johan Törnström at the Karlskrona shipyard. Frustrated with salary negotiations with the shipyard director Fredrik Henrik af Chapman, Törnström is said to have carved this face above the entrance to his workshop, so that af Chapman would see it every day. A silent but unequivocal message.
